After graduating from college, Foster worked as a golf course construction project manager for Wadsworth Golf Course Construction Company for five years. He was responsible for completing 11 golf course projects in six years. Three of these courses have been listed among Golf Digest's "Top 100 Golf Courses in the United States". Other notable projects include: Eagle Trace in Coral Springs, Florida; Linville Ridge in Linville, North Carolina; and renovation work at Augusta National Golf Course.
Shortly after joining Arthur Hills and Associates, one of the top design firms in the U.S., Foster opened the company's western office in 1985 and was responsible for all of their western U.S. projects. During his six years with the firm, he and Arthur Hills designed and completed 16 championship golf courses throughout the country. Several have received national acclaim, including:

In 1991, Foster established his own design firm and since then has completed eight highly regarded golf courses, including: SunRidge Canyon Golf Club, Eaglewood Golf Course for the City of North Salt Lake City, Utah and The Quarry Golf Course in San Antonio, Texas. The Quarry Golf Course was ranked fourth in Texas by Golf Digest (May '95) and second in Texas by GolfWeek (May '95).
Foster is a member of the American Society of Golf Course Architects, Golf Course Superintendents Association of America, United States Golf Association, National Golf Foundation, Donald Ross Society, and the golf Collectors Society of America. An avid golfer, Foster plays to a four handicap.
